Exclusive Interview: Black Veil Brides’ Andy Biersack Talks About His Broken Nose

As reported earlier today, Black Veil Brides frontman Andy Biersack broke his nose last night onstage in Luxembourg, which has caused the group to postpone its current tour dates. He has said, though, that the band will still be on the Buried Alive Tour, kicking off in late November. (For Buried Alive tour dates, click here, and for info on the mega giveaway Revolver is holding for the tour, click here.) Despite his injury, Biersack was kind enough to honor an interviewRevolver had scheduled with him today for our issue out in December. Below, you can read his account of what happened to his nose. We’re wishing that he gets well soon.
“I’m bedridden in a hotel bed in London just sitting here collecting dirt on the blankets and ordering room service and being in pain. I can’t really breathe out of my nose, and it looks like I’m wearing a sleep mask made out of bruises.
“I was onstage doing my typical routine to entertain the crowd. I was rolling around and being crazy. Normally, before ‘Legacy’ goes into a breakdown-y guitar solo-y kind of part, I get down on my knees and do a mock prayer. I did that and then rolled backwards and stood up and I didn’t realize I was directly under the four-foot drum riser. I smashed the bone dead center on my skull. From above my eyebrows, right down the bridge of my nose, that’s where I cracked. I was unconscious for a second.
“I knew something terrible had happened immediately. I jumped up, but I was still in shock and I didn’t really feel it yet. I was rubbing my nose to try to figure out what was happening. And I ran into my tour manager at the side of the stage and I asked him if there was something wrong with my nose. And he looked at me like I was crazy and said it was huge and misshapen. That’s when the realization hit me that I was really hurt. I started getting really dizzy and stumbled my way offstage and got to the backstage area. I positioned myself in front of a mirror and saw it was huge and ridiculous. And that’s when the pain set in and it was pretty excruciating. But there wasn’t a lot of bleeding or anything because of where it broke.
“I went to the hospital in Luxembourg and nobody spoke English. They were really adamant about putting me on a stretcher, and I was very much against that. I walked very fast away from them. They took me in an ambulance right in front of where the fans are, and the last thing I want to do is be the guy who breaks his nose and then has to ride on a stretcher to the ambulance with his thumbs up in the air.
“I walked out with my tour manager and I was pretty dizzy, I couldn’t really see, but I was always pretty cognitive. The only thing I have right now because of the concussion is I feel like I’m watching one of those super druggy movies where all the lights have a trail. Everything I see, it’s as if it sort of has Vaseline around the edges and it’s a little nauseating to be honest. It’s hard to use a computer.
“Right now I’m trying to figure out what to do. I would really like to finish the tour. I’ve been advised against it. But I want to try. At the end of the day, if I have to go onstage and be in pain for 40 minutes I’m do my best to give the audience the show that they have already paid for.”

VOTE FOR BLACK VEIL BRIDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.Rock Of Ages Brings Rock Music and pop Metal out of the Closet

Rock music, like Ozzy Osbourne, should have died years ago.

By that, I mean the brand of AOR and pop metal which has been given a new lease of life by 'Rock of Ages', which opened officially last night in London's West End.

Starring the talents of Justin Lee Collins and X-Factor winner Shayne Ward, it celebrates that era of the 1980s when rock stars had yet to confuse themselves with God, but had an unhealthy crush on cowboys ( Jon Bon Jovi) ; when if they weren't rolling around on car bonnets with glamour models they'd later marry ( David Coverdale of Whitesnake) you'd find them in the jacuzzi snorting cocaine off a hooker's backside ( almost certainly everyone, but definitely Motley Crue.)
It was a time when 'Slippery When Wet' was considered morally offensive, and Poison's 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn' was considered serious songwriting. It was, in short, a time when all dudes, not just Steven Tyler, looked like ladies; when, according to Mickey Rourke's characer in 'The Wrestler', "there were proper songs, until that pussy Cobain came along and spoiled everything."
Like Def Leppard in the 1990s, these songs refused to go away through two decades of grunge and nu-metal. But until 'Glee' put Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin' on the road back to rehabilitation, you'd only hear them on Guilty Pleasures club nights or on specialist rock stations ( and that was when they were playing 'party rock.')

But did we ever stop really loving Starship's 'We Built This City', Whitesnakes's 'Here I Go Again' or of course, the most popular download ever, 'Don't Stop Believin'?

Singing along to the show, the audience at London's Shaftesbury Theatre had the relieved air of someone who's come out after decades in the closet.

Nor does it seem that rock's big night out will be as rare as a smile from Axl Rose. Not only is the movie version of 'Rock of Ages' in the pipeline, but this week daytime Radio 1 played both the Black Veil Brides and Steel Panther.
The Black Veil Brides, who have a sold out tour across the UK this month, combine ball-breaking rock with camel-toe spandex, black warpaint and the kind of hair that's styled by sticking a finger into a electric socket.
Steel Panther, from Hollywood, play 1980s riffs with roll-in-the aisle lyrics; with titles like' Fat Girl' and 'Asian Hooker', they out-Spinal the Tap. And their songs are considerably better.

" Where is Def Leppard? Where is Motley Crue?" Panther asks earnestly in their track, 'Death to All But Metal' The answer is, they'll all be found on tour with Steel Panther in the UK in December. The Darkness, the UK's last experiment with hair metal, played a triumphant headline set at the Download Festival in June, and are also set to tour next year.
We like to regard glam metal bands and their songs with the same furtive horror that comes from farting in a lift. And yet most of the bands featured in 'Rock of Ages' are still going - so someone's buying their records.

While I'll never advocate wearing stone-washed denim again ( and that goes for you too, Agyness Deyn) these tunes offer jubilant, life-affirming fun. Times are serious - why does the music have to be?

The Buzz On: Black Veil Brides

There's not a lot of websites out there for bands made up of five male members that have the words "Makeup Provided By MAC" at the bottom of them. But I guess when you're the Black Veil Brides and your main influences is Kiss, a corporate cosmetic sponsorship comes with the territory. Luckies!!
Believe it or not, most of the members of this post-hardcore fivesome are actually from Ohio. Founded in 2006, the Black Veil Brides somehow saw past the college hoodies and cornfields of the Midwest to set their sights on the bright lights of glam rock. After gaining steam on MySpace, the band signed with StandBy Records, only to later grab the attention of a Lava Records exec when the chief music producer at Hot Topic (yes, the store with the fishnet top your mom may or may not let you wear) clued him in on the huge record sales of the store's BVB t-shirts. The rest, as they say, is black lipstick history.
Black Veil Brides' debut single "Knives and Pens," released in 2009, currently clocks in at over 30 million YouTube views (!!!). That's almost 50 million! I think you get a pin for that! With the help of successful stints on the UK tour God Save The Scream and Vans Warped Tour in the U.S., BVB won Revolver Magazine's Golden Gods Award for Best New Artist, Kerrang! UK Rock Magazine's Best Newcomers, and were nominated for Kerrang! Best International Newcomer. The band's latest release, Set the World on Fire, peaked at No. 17 on the U.S. Billboard 200, and they recently appeared at this year's VMAs (above) in full effing regalia.
And their makeup is on point.
Black Veil Bride's latest, Set the World on Fire, is currently available on Lava Records.

SSMF PREVIEW: BLACK VEIL BRIDES

In true “Behind The Music” style, Black Veil Brides moved to Hollywood following the rock n’ roll dream; and in three short years, the band has gone from being virtually homeless to having a major label deal, to performing at the 2011 Sunset Strip Music Festival alongside forefathers Mötley Crüe.
Before loading in at this year’s street fest, BVB frontman Andy Six phoned TheSunsetStrip.com from the road to discuss the band’s rags to riches story, recording their first “real” record and partying at The Rainbow with Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach. Read all about it…

So being one of the headliners of this year’s street fest, how does it feel to get the chance to play in the middle of The Sunset Strip?

It’s amazing! I mean, we’re a band that all grew up in parts of the Midwest or the South, and we all moved to Los Angeles around the age of 17, and we were all sort of homeless and went through that thing.
We all just sort of grew up with that classic idea of what The Strip was, with The Whisky and The Roxy… And if anything, we’re just excited to be a part of something that has so much history behind it and to be a part of something that pays tribute to all the great things that have happened in that area, and all the great bands that have come out of there.

With BVB’s look and sound, it’s obviously a bit of a throwback or homage to The Crüe.  Have you met the guys before? Played with them?

Yeah, actually I’ve been working with Mick (Mars) for his solo record and he’s a dear friend and a great person; definitely a hero of mine.

The new record, Set The World On Fire, you recorded with Josh Abraham (Korn, 30 Seconds To Mars, Velvet Revolver). What was that process like, working with such a seasoned veteran?
The whole experience for us was amazing! For us, we really think of it as our first real proper record – being that it’s our first major label record, the first time we’ve ever really had an actual budget and time to make an album together as a band.
Josh and the whole production team on the record were all amazing… And getting to record at Pulse Studios in Silverlake and be at home in L.A. was a great experience. We’re excited to hopefully make another record soon.

It seems like the band has gone through quite a few lineup changes in its few short years. Is there a lot of bad blood out there?

I guess that’s not really accurate per say…because when you look at things I’ve performed under the name Black Veil Brides since I was 15 or 16, and growing up it was more just about finding people to play the songs that I was writing with me.
It wasn’t until I moved to Los Angeles in 2009 that we formed what the band is now, and we’ve had the same lineup ever since.

So in the early days, it was just sort of you using the name BVB as a moniker, and finding players to get your stuff out there?

Certainly, yeah. It was an idea I had as a young kid about a band that I wanted to create… I never really had a real band; it was more just a kid’s idea.
But now it’s a real thing and we’re a real band that does everything together, and it’s not just my pipedream anymore. [laughter]

You guys are definitely a band whose music speaks to that young, maybe troubled demographic of kids who are having difficulty sort of navigating through their teen years.  Do you get a lot of feedback from fans that feel like you’ve really helped them cope with their problems?

Definitely. And I think that’s one of the big reasons we all do what we do. Cause I think all of us, especially in rock bands, we’ve all gone through stuff as adolescents… I think we write about stuff that is universal, about having things or people in your life that are somehow creating adversity for you and being able to rise above it and never languishing or feeling sad for yourself.
We talk a lot about always staying proud of who you are and taking a stance against depression and finding your self-worth. We’re all about rebellion, angst and just being happy with who you are.

Growing up in Ohio, did you experience a lot of that kind of adversity?

Well, I was never that kid that sort of sat in the corner feeling sad.  I just always looked at things like, “I could use other people’s ignorance to fuel me…”
I hoped that if anything the kids making fun of me for wearing a Misfit’s T-shirt would just sort of spur me on to do whatever it was I wanted to do in my life, which from a very young age was always just to be in a band.

Seems like it’s working out for you..?

Yeah… It’s going pretty well. I don’t like to look at things like me being somehow different or better than the kids I grew up with. I just look at it like maybe they just didn’t understand… And the fact that I’m able to do what I want to do…it’s like they spurred me on and made me who I am now, and I have nothing but appreciation for them.

What do you guys have coming up after SSMF? What’s the rest of the year looking like?

We’re going to be on tour pretty much until March. Going all over the globe: full European headlining tour, South American headlining tour, Australian tour. Pretty much everywhere in the world we’ll be… I love touring more than everything, so I’m just excited to have the chance to do all that.

So do you prefer being on the road to being at home?

Yeah, I mean, I’ve been touring since I was 16, 17 years old. So really my sort of transition from adolescence into adulthood really happened on the road for me. So I’ve definitely grown from this world.

When the band is at home where do they like to hang out on The Strip?

Well obviously “The Bow” [Rainbow Bar & Grill]. We’ve been going there a lot more often now cause Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) moved to L.A. and he’s a dear friend of ours, so we seem to be going to The Bow with him all the time now [laughter].
Yeah we love being around; it’s where everything is for us.  We love that area. It feels right…

You can catch Black Veil Brides live ON The Sunset Strip during this year’s SSMF street festival on Saturday, Aug. 20. For tickets and more information, visit http://www.ssmf.com

Black Veil Brides Storm New York City

The Black Veil Brides. If you haven’t heard this name, you’re probably not as cool as you think you are. These guys have been on the cover of several magazines, most recently Guitar World (where they are featured as the “future of metal”). Their latest album, Set The World On Fire, has stormed the Billboard charts. Their first music video has over 26 million views on YouTube. They have over 1 million fans on Facebook and nearly 100,000 followers on Twitter.
Ahhh, now you’ve heard of them, huh?!
I had the opportunity to see BVB play a special fan appreciation show at Gramercy Theatre Monday night. In the midst of the Vans Warped Tour, BVB felt the need on one of their few nights off to throw a special party for their NYC fans…at just five bucks a pop.
Needless to say, it didn’t take much for this gig to sell out.
This was my first time seeing BVB, and I’ve got to say…Whoa.
These guys have a rabid fan base. From screaming girls throwing bras on stage to middle aged men going round and round in the pit, there is something about BVB that draws out the crazy loyal fan.
The show in NYC definitely brought out the hardcore fans…it wasn’t uncommon to see people emulate their favorite BVB artist by painting on scars and stitches all over their bodies. And once the show started, their wasn’t a body in the place that was standing still.
BVB received the 2011 Revolver Golden Gods Award for Best New Artist, and after seeing their set last night, there’s not a doubt in my mind that they deserve it. I had an interview scheduled with Andy (lead singer) after the set, but due to some time constraints we’ve had to postpone…
I will let you know when the interview is rescheduled…for now, let me know what you want me to ask Andy!
Oh, and if you haven’t picked up Set The World On Fire, I don’t know what you’re waiting for…get it now and make plans to see BVB live. #STWOF

Interview with Black Veil Brides in Kerrang! magazine 30/6/2011

A grilling from Jeremy Paxman is a walk in in the park next to K!'s feared hat full of questions. The innocuous enough premise - picking bits of paper with questions written on from a piece of headgear and answering them - has a habit of unearthing the strangest details about your favourite bands. So it goes that we put it in front of Black Veil Brides, what we expected to get were some saucy stories of debauchery and decadence. Instead, the Hollywood rockers revealed themselves as perhaps the most peculiar outfit in modern rock....
Kerrang!: You're all trapped on a desert island, who is the most likely to get eaten first?
Ashley: You guys are idiots if you say me, 'cause I got chicken legs.
Jake: I wouldn't eat anybody. Have you seen them?
Andy: Have you seen [guitarist] Jinxx's butt? It's pretty meaty!
Jake: You wouldn't want to eat it.
Andy: If we burned the meat we wouldn't tell.
Jake: We could wrap it in bacon.
Andy: So we'll eat Jinxx then.
Ashley: Sorry buddy. It's because we love you.
Kerrang!: The Mafia offer to you one free hit on someone. Who do you choose?
Andy: Can we go back in time and kill anybody?
Kerrang!: No, they're already dead.
Andy: Okay, no. I wouldn't want to kill anybody!
Kerrang!: If you were guaranteed to get away with murder, who would you choose?
Andy: I don't want to get away with murder! I'd have to live with that for the rest of my life. I would never want to live with killing somebody.
CC: The crying baby on the plane, there you go!
Andy: Aww, dude, you're and asshole!
Kerrang!: Who is the smelliest person on teh bus?
All: Jinxx!
Ashley: Garbage man on the garbage can! He'll sleep in the hallway.
Kerrang!: What's the worst thing you've ever seen a bandmate doing?
Andy: Eating trash out of a garbage can! That's Jinxx again.
Jinxx: Fuck you. I'm going to answer this one. Back in the early days, we were touring Africa. Jake usually eats everybody else's food when he gets really drunk late at night. And yes, I'll eat out of a trashcan, alright. But he was so hungry and there wasn't anyone else's food on the bus for him to eat so he actually killed a helpless baby giraffe and ate it.
Kerrang!: An angel tells you when you're going to die, but says you can pick any way you want to go. What do you pick?
Jinxx: Driving in to a tornado.
CC: No! This is too easy. Sex to death!
Kerrang!: Have you heard of many cases of death by sex?
Andy: Actually there was one. There was this Asian couple that grew up in a very small society and were encouraged not to have sex until they were married. They had sex on their wedding night and they both had heart attacks when the ejaculated and they died. So there you have it. Death by sex; that's how we want to go.
Kerrang!: Which member of Black Veil Brides is most likely to get arrested on a night out?
Jake: Everybody!
Andy: It's kind of a crapshot at that point.
Kerrang!: What's been your most debauched moment?
Andy: (Evasively) ...No. Just no.
Kerrang!: Who in the band has the most irritating personal habits?
Andy: I could answer by saying Jake ate a giraffe...
Jake: I think the answer could be all of us.
Andy: Yeah, I think we all have stuff wrong with us.
Ashley: We're all dysfunctional. It's cool.
Andy: We enjoy our dysfunctions.
Ashley: I love how Andy looks at us as if to say, 'I've got that on you, I've got something on you, and you...'.
Kerrang!: What is your biggest fear that you know is completely irrational and wimpy?
Jinxx: I'm terrified of sock puppets.
Andy: Old black and white footage from The Wizard Of Oz. It freaks me out.
Jake: Spiders.
Andy: What about you CC? Everything?
CC: Yeah. I'm a hypochondriac but despite that my biggest fear would be a girl having my kid against my will.
Kerrang!: What's the best way to seduce a member of the opposite sex?
CC: Play in Black Veil Brides!
Andy: Ohhhhhhhhhh!
Kerrang!: What invention do you wish you had been credited with?
Andy: Toilet Buddy. It's a net that you put in your toilet that would catch your keys, your phone, or your wallet or change, or anything else you might drop in the toilet. Unfortunately it's an invention I've not yet perfected as it would also catch your poo. So I need to find a way to strain the shit out of it and keep all the other things like a straining situation. It might work if there were sharp razors that could cut the poo while it's coming through it, sort of like a meat grinder but then you keep the wallet and change in there.
Jake: He's got hundreds of these. Spy chips is a good one.
Andy: Spy Chips are chips that you put out at a party that have little cameras in them so you can see what everyone's doing. Dog Phone - it's a leash for a dog that is also a phone.
Kerrang!: You've really thought these through have you?
Andy: What's wrong with it? You'll never miss a call because you can't reach your phone because you're walking your dog! Peanut butter and jelly flavoured bread so you don't have to worry about the condiments because it's already done. Injecting cheddar cheese into a hard boiled egg - it's called Cheese Egg. It's if you want to eat a hard boiled egg but you want more flavour.
Jake: How would you make a redwood deck?
Andy: I don't know. I've got nothing for that. Most of my inventions are impractical. Boob Phone - it's a phone you put into the bra of your significant other so that while you're making love you can put your ear to the breast and talk into it. Pants Phone - it's exactly what it sounds like. Monkey Translator - it's a translator that you put in a monkey's head and when he makes a noise it translates into human speak so you can talk to him.
